Apple iPad review – straight from the user

This is an actual, real-life reappraisal of the Apple iPad, from a user who have spent better part of a day playing with the new Apple iPad. We are not mentioning here, however, the true name nor identity of this person, to protect   privacy.

According to this user – while Apple iPad excels in many countss, there are still some things anyone considering buying should probably keep in mind and think to the highest degree. On the plus side of things, the Apple iPad is very fast. Opening and terminating applications is quick , the screen is incredibly responsive, and there is no lag while using the touch screen , and the built-in Safari web browser does a fantastict job of quickly loading even graphics- heavy pages. Very similar the iPhone experience on speed  . The screen is absolutely gorgeous while it is   on. It is crisp, bright, and very easy to see from any angle. But when you turn it off, every finger print and swipe is suddenly very visible, and while it is on, the light is bright enough you don’t see the fingerprints. If you are a neat freak, or just hate finger prints on your devices you’ll have to invest in some microfiber cloths or get used to using your shirt sleeve. This lightning speed must be attributed to the Apple A4 chip which Apple designed and developed in-house, to realize total control on graphics and other user interface components . Apple spent almost a billion dollar developing this proprietary processor.

For balance, let’s go to the not so good side of things with the Apple iPad. As has been thoroughly pointed out, there is not presently much in the way of multitasking within the iPhone OS, but with most expectations pointing towards a summer release of OS 4.0 this might be remedied by mid summer, and almost for sure by a generation 2 iPad release. On the practical side, it should be kept in mind that on such a little screen being able to view multiple applications at once will likely never be something you’ll use, and the speed by which you can open and close applications makes this less a headache than you might think. It isn’t as fast as moving between open apps, but it isn’t a deal breaker by any means. The lack of a camera in this generation is a little surprising, while many have purchased iPad already, the number of competitors likely coming out over the course of 2010 and 2011 will offer a generation 2 with a camera. It’s still an awe-inspiring device, but the ability to video chat with it would decidedly put it over the top, that’s a feature worth waiting for. The lack of Flash support isn’t as irritating as was hyped about initially , but still something one has to consider. Many major sites have evolved to html5, or are in the process of doing so. This allows for full viewing by the Safari browser, and where it exists, it works great. The remaining sites still using Flash show up with annoying little boxes looking for a plugin that is likely never going to exist. If you spend a lot of time on flash heavy sites it really probably is worth considering holding out to see how the Slate/Android Tablets look in a few months, but if you’re mostly just e-mailing and checking facebook (no Farmville) the lack of Flash support probably won’t irritate you too much.

On other aspects, battery life seems to live up to the claims, and you can manage to get about 7 hours before getting the 20% remaining battery life warning , which puts it about right for 10 hours or so of total use. One very important thing to interpret about charging the iPad device is that presently, at launch, there are some issues with charging via USB from many computers.   The iPad is different than other iPod products, as it requires a bit more power to charge up. Unfortunately most USB ports aren’t set up to support that higher power requirement . This is something that may be fixed in a firmware update to allow for a slower charge, or it may simply be that you’ll need to either rely on a new Mac seems like they can handle the power issue, or rely on the wall charger. Just don’t be surprised if you plug it into your computer and it doesn’t show that it is charging.

How about the iPad being a possible laptop replacement? The inclusion of the iWorks utilities gives this device a little bit of a laptop personality. But don’t let that persuade you into believing that you don’t need another computer anymore. You might be able to get away with ditching a laptop if all you really do is e-mail or very light word processing. Good example is probably a stay home mom who just want to do emails or link with Facebook friends. But if you do anything more than that, you’ll like the freedom and ease a full computer offers for more complex tasks. That said, this device is a phenomenal leap towards  time to come tablet style device that may very well be a replacement for your computer, but for now it is more of a casual use device than something you can really expect to do hard core work with. You can put together a slide shows in keynote, which was easy enough to do, but pages isn’t as intuitive as you would have liked, and taking lengthy notes or writing long letters/e-mails/reports will probably make it worth considering buying either the keyboard dock or the wireless bluetooth keyboard.

All in all , the iPad is an impressive device that might make for a reasonable replacement of a netbook for casual users. For people who need something to really do a lot of work on, you may find that for the price that a netbook or laptop still offers the better value for your needs. Future generations of this device will probably transition into fitting that market better than this first generation. However, if you’re an avid reader, casual gamer, music fan, who doesn’t do much more on the web than check a few sites, connect in social sites and e-mail. This thing is definitely worth considering! If you’re on the fence, nothing about this product is so important as to justify running out and buying one right now, but it is worthy of your consideration if you’re thinking you might like a tablet style device. Just go and play with one at Best Buy or an Apple store near you to get a feel for it. With a number of competitors due out over the next few months we’re likely to see some price movement, or a second generation release, so it may be worth it to wait it out a little while.

iPad imitators hope to bite into Apple’s lead

HONG KONG (AFP) –
When Apple announced the arrival of the iPad, it said it would create and define a brand-new sector in the market for computer devices, somewhere between the smartphone and the notebook laptop.

Two months and over two million iPad sales later a string of Asian manufacturers have shown they agree — by unveiling their own tablets which they hope will take a bite out of Apple’s lead.

Over a dozen new iPad-style gadgets have now entered the fray, and more are sure to follow.

At the Computex computer trade fair in Taipei this week, beautiful models posed with shiny black slabs of clever glass — most of which looked pretty much the same as Apple’s iPad.

First out of the box was the catchily named ASUS Eee Pad 101TC. It’s similar in size to the iPad, runs on Windows and will sell for 399 US dollars — around 100 US dollars less than the US price of a basic iPad.

The MSI WindPad 100, which at 499 US dollars costs the same as the iPad, also runs on Windows and boasts a webcam — which is conspicuously absent in the first iPad models. LG’s new UX10 device also has a webcam.

Many newcomers will also use Adobe’s Flash video technology, another perceived flaw in the iPad. Apple refused to allow Flash on its new gadget.

Taiwan-based chipmaker VIA believes the way forward in the tablet market is to go smaller and cheaper.

Its VIA Slate prototype has a seven-inch screen, runs on an old version of Google‘s Android operating system and will retail for between 100 and 200 US dollars. Several other tablet devices will also run on Android.

Right at the bottom of the market is the iPed — which seems to be a direct copy of the iPad, even down to the packaging. It is on sale only over the Taiwan Strait in China, selling in a Shenzhen computer mall for 105 dollars.

Nancy Liu of Taiwan’s Industrial Technology Research Institute told AFP that companies launching their tablets at Computex wanted to prove “they have the capability to catch the trend set by Apple.”

“I don’t think the followers are capable of dethroning Apple’s leadership at least in the short term,” Liu said.

But it’s not the gadget, it’s what you can do with it that counts. And this is where Apple is also streets ahead of the pack. As Jenny Lai, a Taipei-based technology analyst for brokerage firm CLSA, says: content is king.

“Content remains a critical part of the success story for iPad,” she said. “Currently, there are seven major app stores including new entrants Lenovo and Asustek.

“What?s more important for Apple and existing vendors is building up a more user-friendly interface and more choices for online-store users.”

Apple has more than 100,000 downloadable applications compared to the 500 it offered for the iPhone when it first opened online less than two years ago. Google has more than 30,000 apps available for Android.

Lenovo’s application download store for Lephone and other products has around 250 applications. Asustek say it is cooperating with Intel and Microsoft to launch an app store in 2010 on a Windows platform.

And it’s not just computer makers watching each other’s reaction to this “new” market — the struggling old school publishing industries are also looking on in hope.

The tablet computer plus its slightly less glamorous cousin, the e-reader, have been hailed as the saviour of the book and newspaper industries.

Sony, which has an e-reader but does not have a tablet computer on the market — yet — predicts big changes for the publishing industry on the back of the launch of all these devices.

Steve Haber, president of Sony?s digital reading business division, believes the printed book will soon be overtaken by its electronic sister, the same pattern seen with music and photography.

“Within five years there will be more digital content sold than physical content,” he told the Daily Telegraph newspaper.

“I have multiple meetings with publishers and tell them paradigm shifts happen. You can say fortunately or unfortunately you haven’t had a paradigm shift in, what, hundreds of years.

“We in the consumer electronics area have a paradigm shift every year or two.”
