iPhone Excel, iPad Word, iTouch Powerpoint? In Search Of The Best iPhone & iPad Office Apps

I’ve become dependent upon my iPhone / iPad for everyday tasks. As long as Flash isn’t required I can do a ton of useful tasks from my iPhone. But increasingly I’ve encountered many times when I need to get a small task done editing a document – like a Powerpoint presentations or Excel spreadsheet– but the included iPhone or iPad apps did not provide the solution. What I need is an iPad Office Suite.

Say Julie (my partner) emails me a powerpoint deck that I and the exec team need to review.

I can’t get to my desktop computer but I need to review, edit, and send back the deck for the exec team to review. My primary concern is that I be able to open and edit the attachment. With the native viewer I can open and view the .ppt but my iPhone/Touch/Pad won’t let me edit it.

After a bit of research I’ve compiled a list of the best iPad apps that let you edit Office docs (including Powerpoint) from an iPhone or iPad:

1.  AlwaysOnPC (http://www.alwaysonpc.com)

This is a great application that gives you full access to a Microsoft-compatible iPad Office suite.

You can also take care of everything in one place! Simply login to the Dropbox folder to get at your files stored online, or use the email client to open and edit email attachments in one location.

You can also check email or cloud storage services through, as AlwaysOnPC lets you browse with Firefox with Flash on iPhone or iPad.

Pros:

Totally compatible with MS Office no matter which app or platform: iTouch & Powerpoint slides, iPad & Word docs, or iPhone Excel spreadsheets; impressive doc rendering that works even with the most graphic-heavy Powerpoint presentations or chart-laden Excel spreadsheet; speedy opening and saving capabilities when working with online documents on a 3G network; Cloud storage access via native Dropbox Application or browser; one price gets you all Office applications and more. Copying and Pasting between different applications is a must-have.

Cons:

A bit of learning is required to get comfortable with the User-Interface; a 3G or WiFi connection is required to access the application

2. DataViz Documents to Go

DataViz lets us use a Powerpoint editor via an office suite for iPhone

Pros

Can be configured to access Dropbox and a couple other cloud storage services; acceptable mapping of features to the iPhone; I was able to open and edit files opened fine in Powerpoint again on my PC

Cons

Presentations with heavy pictures and graphs sometimes don’t render; can be slow opening decks over 1Mb; does not allow cut and paste function between other programs; a little pricey

3. VNC to your home or work PC

Several VNC programs are available for iPhone – Mocha, LogMeIn, and Ignition to name a few. Use these to access your work/home PC and any applications you have saved there

Pros:

No need to learn anything new – cut/paste between apps – anything you would normally do on your PC.

Cons

Setup on iPhone and home PC required – also requires a good amount of tweaking with settings and firewalls before functioning properly; internet required both for iPhone and home computer; Home computer must always be in “awake” mode – no one can use it and it can’t be in hibernate.

4.   iWork suite from Apple

Apple has made iWork suite with Keynote, Numbers and Pages available in the Appstore for iPad. It takes fourth:

Pros:

It is possible to convert from Office into iWork files (.PPT/PPTx to Keynote, .Doc/x to Pages, .xls/x to Numbers) edit; beautiful interface

Cons:

Not compatible with iPhone/Touch; doesn’t let you save as a .ppt/.doc/.xls; costly at $9.99 per app; Learning curve on UI for Office users.

5.  Google Docs

Google Docs is getting better, but its still incomplete as I don’t see a way yet to edit Powerpoint when accessing via a mobile device like iPhone.

How to source quality Gateway laptop parts.

Gateway is a very popular brand and well known around the world for their computer hardware and systems.  However, when it comes to laptops, one of the problems that many users face when their machines break down is the procuring of quality replacement gateway parts.  With so many competitors and hundreds of generic aftermarket parts in the market today, how does one go about in finding good working, genuine gateway laptop parts?.

So what should you do if you are looking to upgrade or replace Gateway laptop parts? Well, the most obvious answer would be to contact an authorized seller or a service center and get the part replaced. However, did you know that most authorized sellers and service centers sell these parts at a much higher price than wholesalers do? Not only that, they also charge a huge fee to repair or replace the parts if you can’t do it yourself.

However, it doesn’t make much common sense to spend hundreds of $$$ in acquiring a part or two replaced when you can buy a new laptop for a thousand bucks. That is where a Gateway parts wholesaler can really help you and ensure that the upgrade or replacement makes sense. You can save as much as 50% on the price of a Gateway laptop part when you purchase the same from a wholesaler compared with an authorized gateway parts seller.

But if the two are selling the same parts then how can there possibly be such a huge gap in the prices? Well, this is what you really need to understand if you are to save hundreds of $$$ on upgrading or replacing your Gateway laptop parts. A wholesaler buys the Gateway laptop parts in bulk directly from the manufacturer or buys in bulk quantity during clearance sales. This way, he gets a huge discount on the marked prices of Gateway laptop parts and therefore is able to offer you the same.

The next uncertainty is why doesn’t he also charge you the same as an authorized seller and make a big profit? Well, that is because an authorized seller has no reason to convince you about the quality as well as make of the Gateway laptop parts that he is selling to you. However, as against this, a wholesaler needs to convince you that the Gateway laptop parts being sold by him are original, unused (if not mentioned as refurbished or used) and compatible with your existing laptop.

Of course, when you buy from an authorized seller you can stay assured that every part will be original. However, it comes at a cost and therefore you should be a smart shopper and buy from a wholesaler. However, make sure you verify the identity of the wholesaler, his contact numbers, address, previous customers, their experience, refund/return/replacement policies. Also, eternally insist on a bill for every part, be it used or refurbished or new so that you can always claim your purchase and ask for replacement if not provided with the correct or working Gateway laptop parts.

What is in UI may be More Than Meets The Eye: Top Android Apps Meet a New Challenge

Back in the day, the idea of a computer in your pocket, or your wrist like Dick Tracy, was the pinnacle of technology? Of note, I think communications was the focus of that gizmo, but not necessarily computing.

There is a bit of irony in the fact that today, in an age where a 27-inch computer screen is considered normal and a 40-inch HDTV is on the small side, we still spend hours ogling our itty-bitty Android or iPhone displays – which poses some of the following issues for designers:

- Doing more with less: User Interface designers striving to create the top Android apps or best iPhone apps now have to stuff everything back into a screen with the resolution of the original Mac or PC, but is one-fifth the size. Yes, the display has finer resolution, but if you’re ‘of a certain age’ like me, all that resolution can be less useful on a credit card sized screen!

- Nested Menus and Modality: One solution to the small screen design challenge has been to design the interface elements as cascading or nested menus, with each selection putting the app into a different ‘mode’ of behavior. One consequence of this is you can get ‘lost’ in a sequence of navigation (try the DropBox app for accessing online storage), or forget how to get back to another ‘mode’ of operation you were in earlier.

- Promotes less wordiness in textual elements (thank goodness)!

-Icon design is forced into territory it probably doesn’t belong.

Adding a fascinating new dimension to this trend are the Remote Access apps: now you can really use an entire PC inside your smartphone. Examples of Remote Access software include GoToMyPC, LogMeIn, and TeamViewer.

There’s a new iPhone application called AlwaysOnPC that offers users a PC in the Cloud. Brimming with power, this AlwaysOnPC gives customers use of over forty software applications  including word processing, presentations, spreadsheets (OpenOffice continually updates their compatibility with Microsoft Office), an Outlook-like email program, photo editing, and more!

The remote access and Virtual PC service both give you access to a computer that is separate from your phone. A powerful effect of the remote access type solutions (particularly AlwaysOnPC since it is most reliable) is you get to access to a PC-class processor and RAM right from your iPhone, which makes it one of the best iPhone apps and top Android apps we’ve seen.

I believe these new applications will push hardware to new levels. I think Steve Jobs is on the right track with the concept of the “Hybrid UI” that uses ‘local’ UI elements that manipulate processing power that resides in the cloud. AlwaysOnPC seems to fit that model well.

What’s the verdict, then: is the art of user experience being advanced, or set back? The jury is still out in my view, but that’s not going to stop the flow of new devices coming to market.

Basic Tips on How to Set Up a New PC

Setting up a new PC is fairly simple and easy to accomplish once you carefully examine the contents of the box it came in. Generally, the box will contain a monitor, a tower and peripherals such as keyboard, mouse, printer and cables. Computers are designed in such a way that the cables that interconnects the monitor, tower and peripherals are built to only fit the correct slot. So if it fits the slot or plug, 99% of the time, that particular cable is meant to be connected to that particular plug or slot. The user can also consult the manual but because of the need to conserve nature and support the green initiative, most computer manufacturers have stopped shipping paper manuals together with the systems and have resorted to paperless alternatives such as Electronic and online manuals. The user can also contact the vendor if he has no experience in out of the box system assembly.

Connecting the cables is the easy part. The hard part begins when the computer is turned on and booted to the operating system. Majority of computers manufactured run on the Windows® Operating System platform. When the system finally turns on, the user will briefly see a screen that resembles a DOS environment. This is called POST screen. Following the POST screen is the Operating System boot up screen where the user will see a loading animation and after this screen, the Operating System or the operating system will load.

In reference to the widely used Windows ® Operating System, the initial screen will prompt the user to input the needed ownership information such as user names, passwords and preferences. After this, the Operating System will prompt the user to activate online which will verify and authenticate the product to make sure the product is legitimate. This is usually the last step in completing the setting up a new PC.

Software Installation, customization and personalization can follow after the user gets fully familiarized with the different technologies that come with the machine. Basic software to add after setting up is spyware removal, virus removal, data protection, computer diagnostics and productivity software. If problems are experienced during use and the user is not familiar with the issue, he can always contact the PC vendor or Microsoft Support for assistance in troubleshooting and additional services like assistance in configuring and customizing applications, Microsoft Office Support, computer cleaning, Data Migration, data protection, and advanced windows support.

Tidysongs mp3 tagging software

How annoying is it when ITunes or other software misspells titles or artist’s name within your playlist? It makes it impossible to browse on an IPod. Well worry no more because tidysongs will patch up your misspelled songs and even your missing song details. Tidysongs fixes misspelled and misplaced name, trick, year, artist, album, and genre details as well as renames artists and albums within correct format, but there are more features to Tidysongs which makes it vital for itunes user.

Features of Tidysongs:
•Duplicate Songs Remover – Includes a small duplicate song remover that will look for your song library to seek out duplicates, even when the duplicates are spelled another way!
•Fix Misspelled Song Details – This is my favorite feature as it keeps your songs neat and beautiful. It’ll fix everything from misplaced artist, name, to genre details. This is done automatically.
•Fill in misplaced genres, years and artists – Makes your song library less difficult to browse by automatically fill in the artist, album release year and genre for every song. When fixing songs, you are able to choose to use information from the original album the song was released or make use your own information.
•Missing Album Artwork – Make your music look good. tidy songs automatically gets high resolution album artwork for each of the songs so that it’s going to show on your itunes, computer, iphone, TV or other music player. This is done automatically while other software may cause you to manually locate and put in each image.

Tidysongs uses a small online music database with more than 4 million songs to automatically download the precise details for each of the songs and that means you don’t have to type it in. Tidysongs is smarter than any other software on the net right now.  The other software may count on the correct information already as part of your songs to work, but with tidysongs, even when the song names have wrong information or misspelling, Tidysong’s database will find the matching artwork, remove duplicates and strip it up. The best thing about this software is everything is done automatically. Thanks for reading my tidysongs review
